In Lahore’s bustling Gharwi Mohalla, renowned for producing legendary folk and ghazal singers like Mehdi Hassan, Naseebo Lal, and Reshma, a recent hit from Coke Studio has introduced a new sensation: the Gharwi Group. Titled “Blockbuster,” the song blends Umair Butt’s deep vocals with Faris Shafi’s Urdu rap prowess and the soulful singing of the Gharwi Group, amassing over 18 million YouTube views since its May 25 release.
While Faris Shafi and Umair Butt were already established in Pakistan’s music scene, the true stars are Rooha, Sajida, and Abida of the all-women Gharwi Group. Their rise from street singers to viral sensations overnight has placed the spotlight on Gharwi Mohalla in Lahore’s Shahdara district, known for its rich musical heritage and the gharwi instrument, traditionally used for storing milk and creating musical sounds.
Discovered by Coke Studio producer Zulfikar Jabbar Khan (“Xulfi”) through YouTube videos, the Gharwi Group, led by Sajida Bibi, traces its roots to Rajasthan, India. Their journey, highlighted in a stylized video capturing Lahore’s vibrant street life, reflects their passion for music and hopes for a brighter future.
