The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan recently conducted a pre-departure orientation session and award ceremony for 321 Sri Lankan students selected for the “Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships for Sri Lankan Students.” These students, preparing to commence their studies in Pakistan, are now in the process of completing the necessary documentation before joining their respective universities.
Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, the Sri Lankan Minister of Education and Higher Education, expressed gratitude to the Government of Pakistan for its support in enhancing the educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students, faculty, and government officials. He underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, considering it a source of strength for the entire South Asian region.
Congratulating the students on the opportunity to pursue education in esteemed Pakistani universities, Dr. Gunawardhana emphasized the significance of studying abroad for both academic advancement and the enriching experiences it offers. The scholarship initiative, a part of the Pak-Sri Lanka Higher Education Cooperation Programme, aims to foster closer ties between the two nations.
Aayesha Ikram, representing HEC, offered advice to the Sri Lankan students, encouraging them to pursue their educational aspirations, immerse themselves in Pakistani culture, and leverage networking opportunities for personal growth. She stressed that these students not only represent Sri Lanka in Pakistan but will also serve as ambassadors of Pakistan in Sri Lanka upon completing their studies.
The ongoing Allama Muhammad Iqbal Scholarships for Sri Lankan Students project currently supports 351 Sri Lankan students enrolled in various disciplines and levels across Pakistani universities. These fields include Medicine, Engineering and Technology, Management, and more. The initiative reflects a commitment to fostering educational cooperation and cultural exchange between the two countries.
