In a significant step toward modernizing public infrastructure, the federal government has announced a new initiative to provide free Wi-Fi at 40 railway stations across Punjab. This move aims to enhance passenger convenience and bring digital connectivity to travelers nationwide.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi shared details of the project in a recent interview with a private news channel. He stated that the government plans to invest Rs350 billion in Pakistan Railways, including upgrading eight major branch lines throughout the province. The free Wi-Fi initiative is part of a broader infrastructure and service improvement plan.
The decision to offer complimentary internet access is expected to benefit thousands of passengers daily—particularly those who rely on rail travel for long-distance commutes or experience extended wait times at stations.
Abbasi also revealed that discussions are underway with the Sindh government for similar upgrades, indicating that the railway digitalization efforts could soon expand beyond Punjab.
Long-term plans include the highly anticipated Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, a transformative upgrade poised to significantly improve rail operations and travel efficiency. Preparations are also ongoing for Main Line-2 (ML-2), which will further strengthen the country’s transport backbone.
This initiative marks a strong step forward in bridging the digital divide and making Pakistan’s railway network more efficient, accessible, and passenger-friendly.
