The Punjab government has formally launched its Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar housing scheme, marking a major milestone in efforts to provide free residential plots to homeless and low-income families across the province.
The initiative officially began on Wednesday with the completion of the project’s first digital ballot, which generated the initial list of successful beneficiaries.
Following the ballot, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif personally called several winners to congratulate them. She spoke with Rukhsana Bibi from Attock, informing her that she had secured a residential plot under the scheme. The Chief Minister also contacted Mero Mai from Mandi Yazman and her husband Ramesh Lal to share the news of their success.
Maryam Nawaz announced that every recipient of a plot under Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar will be eligible for a Rs. 1.5 million loan to construct their house. The loan will be repayable over nine years through monthly installments of Rs. 14,000, designed to keep repayments within reach for low-income families.
Provincial Housing Minister Bilal Yasin said that a total of 2,000 applicants have won plots in 23 housing schemes across 19 districts in the first phase. According to the breakdown:
- Jhelum received the highest number of plots: 730
- Kasur followed with 388 plots
- Faisalabad received 257 plots
Other allocations included:
- Lodhran – 219 plots
- Okara – 130 plots
- Layyah – 55 plots
- Bhakkar – 52 plots
- Sahiwal – 33 plots
- Sargodha – 25 plots
Smaller numbers of plots were allotted in Khushab, Bahawalnagar, Mandi Bahauddin, Rajanpur, Attock, Gujrat, Bahawalpur, Jhang, Vehari, and Chiniot.
Officials say the Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar project is aimed at addressing housing insecurity for vulnerable families by combining free land allocation with affordable financing for home construction, and that more phases and ballots will follow as the scheme progresses across Punjab.
