Punjab’s interim Transport Minister, Ibrahim Hassan, has revealed an ambitious initiative to introduce electric bikes following the successful implementation of electric rickshaws. This strategic move aligns with the government’s dedication to encouraging sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation, actively advocating for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
Minister Hassan emphasized the substantial contribution of the transportation sector to smog in Punjab, positioning the introduction of electric bikes as a targeted effort to combat and alleviate this pressing environmental challenge.
Underlining the government’s proactive stance, Hassan disclosed plans to distribute a significant number of electric bikes, with a goal of providing at least 200,000 units to students at discounted prices. This initiative not only promotes the adoption of eco-friendly transportation among the youth but also addresses affordability concerns, making electric bikes accessible to a broader segment of the population.
In addition to the distribution plan, the minister highlighted the establishment of a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure throughout the province. This holistic approach acknowledges that the success of electric vehicles relies on a supportive ecosystem, including the widespread availability of charging stations.
The collaboration between the Bank of Punjab and the government further strengthens the viability of this initiative. The financing scheme, specifically designed for students, allows them to acquire electric motorcycles through easy installments over a two-year period. Notably, the minimal interest rate of six percent renders this financing option not only accessible but also financially feasible for students, thereby encouraging the widespread adoption of EVs.
Punjab’s plan to introduce electric bikes, combined with distribution initiatives and financial support schemes, reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at combating smog, promoting sustainable transportation, and enhancing the accessibility of electric vehicles, especially among the student demographic.
