On World Hepatitis Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for united efforts to raise awareness and work towards a hepatitis-free future, announcing a nationwide campaign to eradicate the disease. “On this World Hepatitis Day, let us unite to raise awareness, support those affected by viral hepatitis, and strive for a future free from this burden. Together, we can build a healthier and more prosperous nation,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the day is dedicated to raising awareness about hepatitis and its global impact. He highlighted this year’s theme, “It’s time for action,” as a call for urgent measures to prevent, diagnose, and treat hepatitis.
Hepatitis, a silent epidemic affecting millions globally, causes liver inflammation and can lead to severe complications if untreated. “Pakistan has a high burden of Hepatitis C, with 10 million cases out of 60 million globally. Without preventive actions, we may face an epidemic of liver cancer,” warned Sharif.
He acknowledged the country’s progress in combating viral hepatitis through awareness campaigns, vaccination programs, and improved access to testing and treatment but stressed the need for continued efforts. The government remains committed to overcoming hepatitis challenges, prioritizing prevention, early diagnosis, and accessible treatment options for all.
Sharif announced a nationwide campaign to eradicate Hepatitis C, focusing on decentralizing testing and treatment centers. Every citizen will have free access to screening and treatment facilities. He recalled his tenure as Punjab Chief Minister, where the Pakistan Kidney & Liver Transplant Institute and modern Hepatitis Filter Clinics were established in all 36 districts of Punjab. “We have done it before, and we will do it again, aiming to uplift the health and well-being of those afflicted with HCV, reduce its impact on productivity, prevent liver cancer, and avert premature deaths,” he added.
