Rawalpindi, Pakistan — Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi inaugurated Pakistan’s first-ever Safe and Smart Railway Station in Rawalpindi, highlighting the government’s commitment to making the railway network modern, safe, and passenger-centric.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, Abbasi said the initiative is part of the prime minister’s vision to modernize Pakistan Railways, with similar upgrades planned for all major stations across the country.
The Rawalpindi Railway Station now features a comprehensive surveillance and monitoring system comprising 143 high-definition cameras installed across the station, reservation offices, and surrounding areas. This system enables continuous oversight of both passengers and staff, ensuring better security and operational efficiency.
Abbasi emphasized that the smart monitoring setup would not only improve passenger safety but also enhance supervision of railway employees.
The minister also inaugurated newly renovated lounges and waiting areas, equipped with family and women-only spaces, tea and refreshment counters, free Wi-Fi, and ATM services. He announced that these modern amenities will soon be available at other major railway stations nationwide.
Furthermore, Abbasi shared updates on Pakistan Railways’ modernization drive, noting that older train rakes are being replaced with refurbished models. Three rakes on the Lahore-Rawalpindi route have already been upgraded, with the fourth scheduled for replacement by mid-November. He added that renovation of Faisalabad Station has been completed, while the Karachi Cantt terminal will soon be inaugurated following its upgrade.
With the launch of this smart station, Rawalpindi has set a benchmark for digital transformation and passenger comfort within Pakistan Railways.
