In a step toward digital inclusion, the federal government has confirmed the rollout of public Wi-Fi at select locations in Islamabad, starting with parks and metro bus stations. IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced the plan during a Senate briefing, highlighting it as the first phase of a broader “Smart Islamabad” initiative.
Rather than a citywide launch, this targeted rollout focuses on high-traffic areas to improve internet access for students, commuters, and citizens with limited connectivity. Alongside this, efforts are underway to install fiber-optic networks in over 100 public schools, hospitals, and police stations to support e-learning, e-health, and efficient public service delivery.
The government is also working with the Ministry of Health to enable digital healthcare solutions, including telemedicine and hospital digitization. These efforts mark a shift toward a more connected, transparent, and citizen-focused urban experience — one where access to the internet becomes a right, not a privilege.
