Fauzia Janjua, a Pakistani-American, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Pakistani and Muslim woman elected as the mayor of Mount Laurel, New Jersey. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Township Hall in Mount Laurel, attended by Janjua’s husband and four sons.
Carol Murphy, a representative in the New Jersey State Assembly and a congressional candidate, administered the oath.
Expressing deep honor during her speech at the ceremony, Janjua emphasized that her election is not only a personal accomplishment but also a source of pride for the entire Pakistani community. Born in America to parents from Punjab, she recounted that her father had moved to the U.S. in the 1970s, and she completed her education there.
Janjua’s dedication to community service has focused on educating prisoners and underprivileged children. In pursuit of her commitment to community welfare, she also founded a non-governmental organization (NGO).
Her political journey began when a woman at a state governor’s party recognized her leadership potential and suggested that she could lead the city. This encouragement led Janjua to embark on a political path that culminated in her historic election as the Mayor of Mount Laurel.
