The Government of Pakistan has announced the entry of Azerbaijan-registered vehicles for transit and bilateral trade cargo under the Azerbaijan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement 2024. This move aims to facilitate seamless trade between the two countries. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued SRO.2016(I)/2024, introducing the Azerbaijan-Pakistan Transit Trade Rules 2024. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will restart flights to Europe on January 10, 2025, following the European Union’s decision to lift a four-year suspension. Pakistan is set to export 25,000 tons of high-quality sugar to Bangladesh, marking a historic milestone as the first large-scale sugar export to the country in decades. The shipment is expected to arrive at Chittagong Port next month, with sugar prices hitting $530 per ton on the international market. In addition to Bangladesh, Pakistan has secured sugar export agreements with Central Asian countries, Thailand, and several Gulf and African nations. These exports are expected to bring in between $400-500 million, positioning sugar as a major contributor to Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings.
Khurram Mushtaq has been appointed as the acting CEO of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by the PIA Board of Directors, following the conclusion of Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat’s tenure. Mushtaq, a seasoned executive with a strong aviation background, has previously headed several key departments at PIA, including commercial, airport services, and flight services. Additionally, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has granted the government permission to proceed with PIA’s privatization, ensuring a transparent process.
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a notable gas and condensate discovery from the Upper Sand reservoir at its Pateji X-1 well in Sujawal District, Sindh. The well is producing 12.4 MMSCFD of gas and 196 barrels of condensate daily, with a flowing pressure of 2,551 psi. This marks the second success at Pateji X-1, following a previous find in November 2024. Operated by PPL with 63% interest, alongside joint venture partners, the discovery promises to boost Pakistan’s energy reserves and reduce dependency on imports.
