Adeel Mangi, a Pakistan-born lawyer, is poised to make history as President Joe Biden nominates him for a position on the federal appeals court. Pending approval by the US Senate, Mangi is set to become the first Muslim American to hold this position, serving on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia, covering New Jersey, Delaware, and the Virgin Islands.
Mangi, with extensive legal experience, has served on the boards of the Muslim Bar Association of New York, the Legal Aid Society of New York, and Muslims for Progressive Values. Additionally, he has been an ally board member for the National LGBT Bar Association.
His legal expertise spans commercial contracts, false advertising, and consumer protection statutes in both state and federal courts. Notably, Mangi secured a $2 billion verdict in a recent case related to the theft of trade secrets in the software industry.
A Harvard and Oxford-trained lawyer, Mangi has also represented the Muslim community in court. His nomination coincides with President Biden facing criticism from Muslim voters for his pro-Israel stance. This nomination follows the historic confirmation of Zahid N Quraishi, the first Muslim nominated to a federal district court by President Biden two years ago.
