Held on Sunday, 20th July 2025, the Galiyat Mountain Trail Race returned for its fourth edition, bringing together trail runners from across the globe in the breathtaking highlands of the Galiyat region. Organized by Margalla Trail Runners (MTR), this year’s event demonstrated Pakistan’s growing ability to host international-standard high-altitude endurance races, both in terms of logistics and athlete experience.
Challenging Course and Global Standards
The event featured two internationally certified categories under the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) regulations. The 60KM Ultra Trail, which began at 5:00 AM from Thandiyani, challenged runners with a steep and rugged course involving a 2,000-meter elevation gain and a strict 12-hour cutoff time. Later in the day, the 20KM Trail Race began at 11:00 AM from the historic Nathia Gali Club, offering a compact yet demanding trail with a 500-meter elevation change and a 4-hour completion limit.
With over 230 participants, including national champions, international trail athletes, diplomats, and local runners, the race offered a dynamic and diverse field. Its execution affirmed the region’s potential as a future hub for global trail running circuits.
New Records and Standout Performances
The 60KM men’s race saw a thrilling finish, as Wiqar Ahmed shattered previous records by completing the course in 6 hours, 39 minutes, and 58 seconds. Muzammil Shahzad Awan followed closely, just 45 seconds behind, with Sadiq and Sajjad tying for third at 7 hours, 51 minutes, and 6 seconds. In the women’s 60KM category, Christina Wieser successfully defended her title, finishing in 8 hours, 28 minutes, and 14 seconds, while Anja Myrtveit and Anum Uzair placed second and third, respectively.
In the 20KM competition, Israr Muhammad claimed the top spot in the men’s division with a time of 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 17 seconds. Close behind were Muhammad Saad Sikandar and Muhammad Ramzan. Among the women, Jessie Beham led with a finish time of 2 hours and 43 minutes, followed by Saltanat Simbina and Neelab Kayani.
Collaboration, Sponsorship, and Trail Spirit
The event’s success was made possible through the collaboration of sponsors and event partners. CUST University served as the title sponsor, while Nestlé Professional provided hydration support along the course. Nizam Watch House contributed as the gifting partner, and Flow Events ensured seamless event operations. The digital presence and campaign were led by Optimize Digital, contributing to the event’s widespread online visibility and media coverage.
Behind the scenes, a team of dedicated volunteers, aid station managers, medics, and community members played a pivotal role in managing logistics, guiding runners, and maintaining the high-altitude trails under challenging weather conditions.
Adventure, Altitude, and the Future of Trail Running in Pakistan
Despite misty weather and technical terrain, the race unfolded with precision, resilience, and camaraderie. Participants praised the event for its well-marked trails, scenic beauty, and warm hospitality. As Pakistan continues to make its mark on the global adventure tourism map, the Galiyat Mountain Trail Race stands tall—both literally and figuratively—as a symbol of endurance, unity, and high-altitude ambition.
