Lahore is taking a major step towards smarter urban transport as the city gears up to install advanced traffic signal systems at its busiest junctions. The initiative, led by the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA), kicks off with a pilot project at Faisal Chowk on The Mall.
Modern Traffic Signals Nearing Completion at Faisal Chowk
According to TEPA Chief Engineer Iqrar Hussain, the groundwork at Faisal Chowk has been completed, and the installation of modern, fully automated traffic lights is currently in progress. Inspired by systems used in countries like the US and Canada, these signals are designed to streamline traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents.
Wider Rollout Depends on Pilot Results
If the pilot proves successful, similar smart traffic systems will be introduced at other major intersections across Lahore. TEPA is hopeful that these upgrades will offer long-term solutions to traffic congestion and enhance overall road safety.
Collaboration with Traffic Police Ensured
To make the project more effective, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is working closely with traffic police. LDA Director General Tahir Farooq stressed the importance of this coordination, ensuring the new systems serve their purpose and improve commuting for everyone in the city.
