In a groundbreaking achievement, scientists from Khyber Medical University (KMU) and Gomal University have developed an indigenous herbal ointment, Leish-Nat Z, for the treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniosis (CL). This painful and disfiguring skin disease has seen a surge in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) over recent years. The ointment, which is made from a blend of natural ingredients like Allium Sativum and Neem Tree, has shown promising results in laboratory and clinical trials.
The development of Leish-Nat Z is particularly significant for KP and Baluchistan provinces, where CL is endemic, and treatment has relied heavily on international support. The new drug offers a more affordable and accessible option for patients who have struggled with the high costs and pain associated with current treatments like Glucantime injections.
Vice Chancellor KMU, Dr. Zia ul Haq, announced funding for large-scale clinical trials, aiming to treat around 340 patients. Following successful trials, the drug will be produced commercially, offering a much-needed solution for thousands of CL patients in Pakistan. The cost of Leish-Nat Z is expected to be around Rs. 850 per bottle, making it a more economical option for patients, especially if government subsidies are provided.
