Australia is intensifying its efforts to assist Pakistan in combating human trafficking through a new phase of support. The latest initiative aims to strengthen crucial systems and provide specialized training for investigators.
Phase II of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Reporting Enhancement project, funded by the Australian Government, will enhance Pakistan’s fight against human trafficking. This phase includes upgrading the TIP hotline and referral system with improved infrastructure and a secure data management system.
The project will also boost the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) capacity by offering targeted training, improving their ability to effectively manage trafficking cases.
The project was officially launched at a signing ceremony attended by Neil Hawkins, the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Geir Tonstol, the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director for Pakistan. The Director General of the FIA was also present.
Australia’s partnership with Pakistan strengthens anti-human trafficking efforts, building on the achievements of Phase I, which established a Management Information System (MIS) for TIP reporting and a framework for a TIP facilitation center. Phase II aims to further reinforce the FIA and enhance the TIP Reporting Portal.
Geir Tonstol, ILO Country Director for Pakistan, expressed enthusiasm for the second phase, emphasizing its goal to improve the capacities of provincial and federal entities in reporting trafficking cases. He highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to combating trafficking, focusing on prevention, protection, prosecution, participation, and partnerships.
Tonstol also stressed the need for enabling conditions like freedom of association to eliminate unacceptable forms of work. By integrating fundamental labor rights, workers can collectively voice their concerns and advocate for their rights.
Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Neil Hawkins, reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and modern slavery in Pakistan. He emphasized that Australia’s support is focused on safeguarding human rights, advancing development, and enhancing Pakistan’s global standing. Through collaboration with the ILO and FIA, the goal is to create a stronger, more coordinated response to protect vulnerable individuals.
The project aims to improve both domestic and cross-border efforts against human trafficking and smuggling. By enhancing communication and collaboration among relevant authorities, the strengthened TIP reporting system will play a crucial role in preventing trafficking and protecting vulnerable populations.
