In response to the pervasive issue of plastic pollution, Pakistan declared at a UN environment summit that it intended to create cities along the Indus River with zero plastic waste.
The plan was presented to the UN by Pakistan’s ambassador, Munir Akram, who also highlighted the plan’s importance in relation to the larger ‘Living Indus Initiative.’ The goal of this project is to address the pressing environmental issue that urban plastic trash poses.
In honor of the International Day of Zero Waste, the announcement was made at the UN headquarters.
Key towns along the Indus Basin, such as Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Multan, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta, will establish zero plastic waste cities as part of the plan.
