Pakistan has experienced a notable surge in copper exports to China, with a 9% increase in the first eleven months of 2023, surpassing the one billion dollar mark, according to sources from the Commerce Ministry of Pakistan.
Ghulam Qadir, the Commercial Counsellor at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing copper and related product exports to China. He anticipated a further rise in export values, particularly for refined copper products.
Actively seeking foreign investments, Pakistan aims to attract significant investments from prominent Chinese companies to bring value addition and produce high-quality products for the global market. Qadir highlighted that such collaborations would not only boost Pakistan’s economy but also bring advanced technologies and expertise, enhancing manufacturing capabilities.
Qadir mentioned the active involvement of the Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC), a major player in the Chinese copper sector, in Pakistan. MCC played a crucial role in establishing the Saindak copper mines since 1995.
Awis Mir, Chairman of DEA group, a Pakistani copper exporter, attributed the export surge to increased investments by Chinese companies in collaboration with local Pakistani firms. Mir highlighted the heightened demand for copper products in China post-COVID-19 and anticipated the continuation of this trend, fostering increased economic cooperation between the two countries.
