Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced an ambitious new 25-kilometer signal-free corridor that aims to reshape daily travel between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The project will connect Islamabad Expressway to Peshawar Road, featuring 9 underpasses and 3 flyovers, with an estimated cost of around Rs 30 billion. According to the chief minister, construction work is beginning immediately, with a completion deadline set for April next year.
“Islamabad Expressway se Peshawar Road tak 25 kilometre ka signal-free corridor ban raha hai. Is mein nau underpasses aur teen flyovers shamil hain… Aaj kaam shuru ho raha hai, agle saal April mein yeh wada poora hoga,”
– Maryam Nawaz Sharif
Fast-Track Development in Rawalpindi
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that Rawalpindi has seen more development in the last one and a half years than ever before, crediting this momentum to the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N). She highlighted that the government’s focus has been on reducing chronic traffic congestion and improving road connectivity across the city.
This corridor is part of a larger development push that includes multiple road, underpass and flyover projects designed to create a largely signal-free travel experience for commuters moving between major points in Rawalpindi and the federal capital.
‘Progress Accelerates Under PML-N’
Reinforcing her political stance, Maryam Nawaz stated that national development accelerates when PML-N and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif are in power, and slows when they are not in office. She framed the signal-free corridor as an example of how leadership, stability and long-term planning can deliver large infrastructure projects on time.
What This Means for Commuters
Once completed, the signal-free corridor is expected to:
- Reduce travel time between Islamabad and Rawalpindi
- Offer smoother connectivity from Islamabad Expressway to Peshawar Road
- Support parallel infrastructure projects on Rawalpindi’s main arteries
- Ease congestion, improve road safety, and enhance logistics efficiency for daily commuters, traders and businesses
The project is being positioned as a flagship initiative in Punjab’s broader plan to modernize Rawalpindi’s infrastructure and boost economic activity in the region. If delivered on schedule, it could significantly change how thousands of people move between the twin cities every day.
