Port Qasim is set for one of the most significant upgrades in its history as Pakistan positions the port to play a central role in achieving the country’s $100 billion revenue target, according to Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.
Speaking on Monday, the minister said the expansion plan will strengthen Port Qasim’s status as a major industrial and trade hub in the region. He highlighted that the port was recently ranked among the world’s top 10 most improved container ports, reflecting Pakistan’s progress in adopting digital systems and modern cargo-handling technologies.
The government’s upgrade roadmap includes the construction of new multipurpose and container terminals, the creation of a dedicated Special Economic Zone, and the development of Pakistan’s first Sea-to-Steel Green Maritime Industrial Corridor.
Chaudhry said the corridor will connect maritime trade directly to steel production and industrial processing, reviving Pakistan Steel Mills and reducing dependence on imported raw materials.
“Port Qasim will evolve into a complete maritime-industrial ecosystem, driving economic growth beyond cargo handling,” he stated.
The plan also calls for investments in road, rail, and communication links to cut logistics costs and enhance trade efficiency. LNG terminals and power plants within the port will support expanding industrial operations.
The minister added that ship recycling, iron ore processing, and coal handling will be integrated into a continuous value chain that creates employment and boosts domestic output.
He reaffirmed that trade corridor expansion, modern infrastructure, and targeted investment remain at the heart of the government’s economic revival strategy.
