Haji Baloch, a Karachi-based fisherman, experienced a windfall when he hauled in a substantial catch of valuable Shawa fish, also known as herring fish. These rare fish are prized for their remarkable healing and medicinal properties, contributing to their high market value.
The local fisherman’s fortune took a dramatic turn as he became an overnight millionaire with the entanglement of hundreds of these precious fish in his net, estimating the total at around 1600.
While initial reports from various media outlets suggested that the entire haul was sold for Rs. 70 crore, ProPakistani sought confirmation from Mehran Ali Shah, Chairman of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum. According to Shah, the figures circulated in the media were inaccurate, and the complete catch was actually sold for Rs. 18 crore.
This incident echoes a trend of local fishermen experiencing sudden wealth, a phenomenon not uncommon in the region. In a similar event last year, a Gwadar-based fisherman captured a rare 48-kilogram croaker fish, selling it for a considerable sum in an auction.
