In a welcome relief for commuters and goods carriers, Lahore’s transport fares have been reduced by 5% after the recent cut in High Speed Diesel (HSD) prices. The decision, made on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, ensures that the benefits of lower fuel costs are directly passed on to the people.
The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to enforce the revised fare structure across the city. Updated fare lists must now be displayed at bus stands, stops, and inside all public transport vehicles for transparency.
To guarantee compliance, enforcement squads have already taken action against violators. According to officials, 10 vehicles were seized, 7 challans issued, and fines worth Rs80,000 were collected. Citizens can also register complaints regarding overcharging through the Transport and Mass Transit Department’s helpline 1071.
This fare adjustment comes after the federal government announced a Rs12.84 per litre cut in diesel prices, reducing the HSD rate to Rs272.99 per litre, while petrol remains unchanged at Rs264.61. Kerosene and light diesel oil were also reduced by Rs7.19 and Rs8.20 per litre, respectively.
Since HSD is the primary fuel used by buses, trucks, trains, and agricultural machinery, the fare reduction is expected to ease the financial burden on daily commuters, reduce transport costs, and help stabilize prices of essential goods across Punjab.
Authorities emphasized that the step would not only bring relief to citizens but also help curb inflationary pressures linked to transportation expenses.
