The Sahiwal Coal-Fired Power Plant, located in Punjab, is a major project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a capacity of 1,320 MW, it is designed to address Pakistan’s long-standing energy shortages.
Strategic Energy Solution
Commissioned in 2017, the plant consists of two 660 MW supercritical units. Developed by a consortium led by China’s Huaneng Shandong Ruyi, the plant is expected to provide stable power to the national grid while significantly reducing energy deficits.
Environmental Considerations
Despite being a coal-fired plant, Sahiwal has integrated advanced environmental technologies. These include flue gas desulfurization and electrostatic precipitators to reduce emissions, aligning with CPEC’s commitment to sustainability.
Socio-Economic Impact
The plant has not only enhanced Pakistan’s energy capacity but also created thousands of local jobs. Training centers have been established, offering technical skills to local youth and promoting long-term economic growth in the region.
