President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday urged the Sindh government to implement a comprehensive, sustainable plan to prevent urban flooding in Karachi. During a meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr, the President emphasized adopting international best practices for managing sewage and stormwater.
Experts presented solutions based on the tunnel sewer systems of Washington DC, the London Super Sewer Project, and Singapore’s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System. They proposed developing a network of sewer tunnels under high-flood zones to minimize public disruption and manage the city’s 450 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage.
The current drains, which collect sewage and stormwater into the Lyari and Malir rivers, are inadequate and contribute to urban flooding. President Zardari stressed the importance of completing a feasibility study within three months and seeking international environmental financing. Additionally, he highlighted the need for similar measures in Hyderabad.
