KUALA LUMPUR — Against all odds and after a nail-biting wait, Pakistan’s men’s hockey team has officially secured a place in the semi-finals of the FIH Nations Cup 2025, following a dramatic twist in Pool B standings.
Despite a narrow 4-3 loss to New Zealand in their final league-stage match, the Men in Green managed to edge their way into the top four, thanks to goal difference — a technicality that became the deciding factor after Malaysia failed to win big enough in their final match.
Malaysia needed a two-goal win over Japan to overtake Pakistan in the standings. And although they clinched a 2-1 victory, it wasn’t enough. Pakistan’s superior goal difference kept them in second place in Pool B, sending them through to the knockout stage alongside group leaders New Zealand.
Pakistan’s road to the semi-finals wasn’t smooth.
Their opening game ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw against hosts Malaysia, despite Pakistan leading twice during the match.
Early goals by Ahmed Nadeem and Abdul Rehman gave Pakistan a dominant edge, but Malaysia fought back hard in the final quarter.
Though Rana Waheed Ashraf restored Pakistan’s lead briefly, Syed Cholan’s late equalizer sealed the draw.
In their second match, Pakistan delivered a spirited performance against Japan, coming from behind to win 3-2 in a thrilling contest. The victory gave them the crucial edge in points and goal difference that ultimately proved decisive.
Pakistan now prepares to face Pool A toppers France in the first semi-final on Friday, a clash that promises intensity, skill, and national pride.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will go head-to-head with Korea in the second semi-final later the same day.
The tournament final is scheduled for Saturday, bringing the eight-team contest to an exciting conclusion.
