In a bid to upgrade the capital’s public transport and cut down on pollution, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is planning to introduce an electric tram service in Islamabad. The project reflects the government’s growing focus on sustainable and modern urban infrastructure.
Planning and Study in Progress
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa shared that a feasibility study has already been launched. Talks are underway with a Chinese consulting firm to explore the practical aspects of the tram system — from route planning to financial and technical logistics.
Key Routes Identified
Four major routes are being considered, including a line from Rawat to Faisal Mosque via Expressway, and another from Jinnah Square to the Islamabad International Airport along the Srinagar Highway. These routes have been selected based on daily commuter flow and connectivity needs.
Digital Upgrades for Public Transport
As part of broader improvements, CDA is also introducing digital information screens at bus stops and developing a mobile app to provide real-time updates. A central control room is being set up at Zero Point to monitor operations and ensure smooth service delivery.
Towards a Cleaner, Smarter Capital
This electric tram initiative is one of several steps Islamabad is taking to embrace cleaner transport options. By reducing traffic congestion and fuel consumption, the city is making steady progress towards becoming a more sustainable and commuter-friendly capital.
