At the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in Khankendi, Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif put forward Pakistan’s regional vision focused on trade expansion, climate resilience, and connectivity through cross-border infrastructure. He stressed the urgency of joint efforts for sustainable development, calling on ECO nations to collaborate on low-emission transport corridors and a regional carbon market to unlock climate financing.
During his address, the Prime Minister reminded attendees that Pakistan remains among the top ten countries most vulnerable to climate change, recalling the devastating 2022 floods that displaced over 33 million people. He emphasized that regional unity and financial cooperation are essential to protect shared futures.
On the sidelines of the summit, Shehbaz Sharif met with leaders from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Iran. With Uzbekistan, both sides committed to fast-tracking projects like the Trans-Afghan Railway and strengthening ties in trade, energy, and infrastructure. Talks with Azerbaijan focused on advancing investment and connectivity, while meetings with Türkiye and Iran reviewed existing partnerships and agreed on deeper engagement across sectors.
In a cultural win, Pakistan proudly celebrated Lahore being declared the ECO Tourism Capital for 2027. The Prime Minister extended a heartfelt invitation to all member countries to explore Pakistan’s cultural soul through the vibrant city of Lahore.
Through every engagement, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the ECO Vision 2025, aiming to drive inclusive growth, regional modernization, and long-term resilience across the ECO bloc.
