Light to heavy monsoon rains brought relief to Karachi on Tuesday night, transforming the weather after a period of sweltering heat. The sporadic showers, accompanied by lightning and thunder, affected almost all parts of the metropolis, with Gadap, Orangi Town, Surjani Town, and North Karachi receiving the heaviest rainfall. According to the Met Office, Gadap near Baqai Hospital recorded 42.4mm of rain, while Orangi Town, Surjani Town, and North Karachi received 29.4mm, 24.1mm, and 24mm, respectively.
Other areas experiencing rain included II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Shahrea Faisal, Old City Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Tariq Road, Malir, Korangi, Quaidabad, and Scheme 33. The showers have not stopped in some areas, with more rain predicted for Wednesday.
Heavy rains led to flooding on streets and arterial roads, causing traffic disruptions. Karachi Traffic Police advised citizens to take precautions while driving and avoid unnecessary travel during the rains.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah instructed immediate drainage of rainwater across cities in Sindh and directed government officers and relevant staff to remain in the field until the drainage is complete. The Karachi Traffic Police were also instructed to take measures to avoid traffic disruptions due to the rains.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted that the prevailing low-pressure system could bring moderate to heavy showers to Karachi until Thursday, August 1. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued an advisory, warning of urban flooding in Karachi and other cities until August 3, due to monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal.
