In a bold step toward combating pollution and promoting sustainable practices, the Punjab government has launched the Green Credit Program, offering Rs100,000 in cash rewards to motorcyclists who convert their petrol bikes into electric vehicles (EVs).
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the initiative on Monday, stating that it aims to promote environmentally responsible behavior while creating a greener Punjab. The program not only supports EV adoption but also rewards citizens for planting trees and using energy-saving LED lights in their homes.
Citizens can register on the official Green Credit Program website, where they can participate in eco-friendly activities and earn green credits. These credits can then be redeemed for cash rewards. Families are encouraged to involve children in the effort to make Lahore—and Punjab—cleaner and healthier.
Residents of Lahore can also receive free saplings at their doorstep by calling 1399, supporting the government’s wider “Plant for Pakistan” campaign. Under this campaign, 300,000 trees will be planted along the Ring Road, with each tree geo-mapped and monitored using Australian technology.
To further boost environmental resilience, the government has recovered encroached forest land, and will soon launch a technology-based fire control force, overseen by the Bank of Punjab.
Additionally, seven air quality monitors have already been installed in Lahore under the Punjab Air Quality System, with smog control listed as a key focus area.
“All Lahoris must plant more trees,” Minister Aurangzeb urged. “The more we plant, the healthier our air will be.”
This initiative is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s broader vision to improve urban air quality, green spaces, and environmental responsibility in the province.
