Islamabad is set to undergo a significant transformation in its public transport system with the introduction of 30 electric buses from China, marking the beginning of a broader initiative that will see a total of 150 buses arriving soon. Previously these buses gained popularity in Uzbekistan and now they are all set to increase public transport.
The buses, dispatched from China, are expected to reach Karachi within three weeks before making their way to Islamabad in May following customs clearance procedures. Upon arrival, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will oversee the initial operation of these buses through the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) contractor, utilizing the charging facility at the Convention Centre.
As part of the plan, arrangements are underway for the establishment of a permanent depot at Zero Point to facilitate the maintenance and operation of the electric buses. It is anticipated that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the service, signaling the government’s commitment to improving public transportation in the capital city.
The routes for these electric buses will cover key areas such as Police Foundation, Pims, and Aabpara, ensuring connectivity to important destinations across Islamabad. NRTC has been contracted for the operation of these buses, with the CDA paying between Rs306-331 per kilometer for their services.
This initiative builds upon previous efforts to enhance public transportation infrastructure in Islamabad, following the success of metro bus services. It aims to address the longstanding deficit in public transport that has persisted since the discontinuation of GTS buses in the 1990s. With the introduction of eco-friendly electric buses and improved connectivity, Islamabad is poised to witness a significant improvement in its public transport system, benefitting residents and visitors alike.
