In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that Mushtaq Ahmed, the World Cup-winning leg-spinner and former Pakistani player, has been named as Bangladesh’s new spin bowling coach.
Prior to the training camp later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe, Mushtaq is expected to report to the team. Up till the end of the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in 2024, he will keep working with the Bangladeshi squad.
The 53-year-old offers a plethora of experience to his current position having previously worked as the spin bowling coach for England (2008–2014), the West Indies (2018–19), and Pakistan (2020–22), in addition to consulting for Pakistan’s team bowling (2014–16).
During his brilliant cricket career, Mushtaq took 185 wickets at an average of 32.97 in 52 Test matches and 161 wickets for Pakistan in 144 One-Day Internationals. He was crucial to Pakistan’s victory in the 1992 World Cup, as he famously sent Graeme Hick packing in the final with one of his googlies.
