The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $320 million loan to enhance rural connectivity in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The project aims to upgrade 900 kilometers of roads, improving all-weather access to remote areas, according to ARY News.
Upgrading Roads to Boost Rural Connectivity
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rural Roads Development Project will strengthen key routes that connect remote communities to essential services like education, healthcare, and markets. These roads, often damaged by floods, will now be rebuilt using climate-resilient designs to ensure long-term sustainability and safety for travelers.
Enhancing Socioeconomic Development
ADB’s Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, emphasized the importance of this initiative in fostering regional growth. He noted that improved road infrastructure will significantly reduce travel time and transportation costs, opening up new economic opportunities for millions in the region.
Addressing Climate Vulnerabilities
The project will also tackle the growing climate risks faced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In recent years, the province has experienced increased rainfall and flooding, leading to widespread road damage. The ADB project includes a comprehensive flood susceptibility study to identify priority roads and minimize future risks.
Long-Term Sustainability and Maintenance
To ensure the sustainability of these improvements, ADB will assist the government in developing contracts for the operation and maintenance of key tourism roads. These efforts will help maintain the province’s road network and support long-term economic growth
