Former US President Donald Trump announced a new deal between the United States and Pakistan to jointly develop massive oil reserves in Pakistan. In a social media statement, Trump said:
“We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves. We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership.”
While no further details were disclosed, the deal aligns with recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations. Last week, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that a trade agreement was “very close” following talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Dar and Rubio reportedly discussed strengthening cooperation in critical minerals and mining. The move is seen as part of Washington’s strategy to boost partnerships in Asia and counter regional influence from China.
In 2024, US-Pakistan goods trade reached $7.3 billion, with a $3 billion US trade deficit.
Trump also claimed a pivotal role in mediating the recent ceasefire between Pakistan and India, though New Delhi disputes this assertion.
