Punjab’s Pink Bus Initiative for Women’s Safety and Convenience
The Punjab government is set to launch a fleet of “pink buses” to provide safe and comfortable transportation for women in Lahore. This service, announced by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, will operate on 16 routes, with each route designated one or two buses solely for female passengers. The initiative aims to reduce safety concerns for women commuting across the city.
Addressing Women’s Mobility Needs Across Lahore
The pink bus service marks a significant step in addressing the mobility and security needs of women in Lahore. The government’s objective is to provide women with safer travel options, minimizing the risks they often face in mixed-gender transportation. The buses are expected to alleviate congestion on public transport and offer a smoother, more convenient commute for women.
Public Support and Infrastructure Concerns
This move has received widespread support from local women and advocates for women’s rights. However, the initiative has raised infrastructure-related concerns during a Punjab Assembly session, where Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan highlighted the need for equitable tax policies. He noted that residents outside Lahore, such as in Toba Tek Singh, should not bear the costs of infrastructure improvements within Lahore.
Future of Women’s Public Transport in Punjab
With the pink bus service, Punjab is taking a proactive step toward enhancing women’s security in public spaces. If successful, this service could expand to other cities in the province, further promoting safe public transportation for women and setting an example for other regions in Pakistan.
