In response to the pressing challenges in the energy sector, the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Air University Islamabad (AU) on Tuesday. This collaboration aims to boost research, development, and innovation in energy efficiency and conservation.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Sardar Mohazzam, Managing Director of NEECA, and Air Marshal Abdul Moeed Khan HI (M), Vice-Chancellor of Air University. Both expressed optimism that this partnership would enhance energy efficiency and conservation, making energy more accessible and affordable for consumers.
The Vice-Chancellor praised NEECA’s efforts and emphasized the importance of replicating this collaboration nationwide. He highlighted the need to institutionalize energy efficiency and conservation across the country and assured AU’s continued support in implementing this initiative effectively.
During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out that while demand-side energy management is crucial for addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges, it often receives insufficient attention. He stressed that energy efficiency and conservation are essential for managing peak loads and mitigating national energy issues. He also mentioned the importance of developing industrial and academic linkages to build indigenous capacities in energy efficiency.
Dr. Sardar Mohazzam highlighted the urgent need for focusing on energy-efficient technologies and fostering a culture of energy conservation, especially given the rising energy prices and the looming global recession. He emphasized that creating a critical mass of specialized knowledge and skilled local human resources in energy efficiency is vital for the growth of this emerging market. He believes that the collaboration between NEECA and AU will be instrumental in promoting energy efficiency and conservation in Pakistan.
Over the past years, NEECA has institutionalized energy efficiency and conservation across key sectors of the economy, particularly in the building and industrial sectors. NEECA is committed to ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of energy in Pakistan through a supportive policy framework. The authority has developed several key initiatives, including the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy 2023, the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Action Plan 2023-30, the Energy Conservation Building Code 2023, and Minimum Energy Performance Standards for electric appliances.
This collaboration will involve engaging the top management of the Air Force and its associated departments to adopt energy efficiency and conservation practices in their construction and operational projects nationwide.
