In a thrilling encounter at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, Pakistan triumphed over England by 79 runs in the semi-finals of the World Championship of Legends 2024. This victory marks Pakistan’s fourth consecutive win in the tournament, maintaining their unbeaten streak. Previously, they secured victories against formidable teams such as Australia, the West Indies, and their arch-rivals, India.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan set an imposing target by scoring 196 runs for the loss of four wickets. The innings began with the dismissal of their in-form openers, Kamran Akmal and Sharjeel Khan, who managed to score 11 and 13 runs respectively. However, a crucial 121-run partnership between Sohaib Maqsood and Shoaib Malik provided the backbone of Pakistan’s innings, ensuring a substantial total. Maqsood impressed with a brisk 64 off 44 balls, while Malik contributed a swift 51 off 33 balls.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq, stepping in for the absent Younis Khan, added a vital 23 runs off 14 deliveries, and Abdul Razzaq chipped in with a quickfire 20 off 9 balls, further bolstering the score.
In their chase of 197 runs, England faced an early setback with the loss of their captain, Kevin Pietersen. Ian Bell followed soon after, run out by Yasir Arafat for 11 runs. Phil Mustard attempted to anchor the innings and keep England in contention, but his departure for 34 marked the beginning of the end for the English side. Kevin O’Brien’s effort was cut short as he was clean bowled by Shoaib Malik for 24 runs.
The Pakistani bowlers maintained consistent pressure, taking wickets at regular intervals and preventing any substantial partnerships from forming. England was ultimately bowled out for 117 runs. Saeed Ajmal was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets, while Abdul Razzaq took two. Shoaib Malik, Sohail Khan, and Aamer Yamin each contributed with a wicket.
With this comprehensive victory, Pakistan has secured their place in the semi-finals of the World Championship of Legends, showcasing their dominance and determination to clinch the title.
