The Aga Khan University (AKU) has been ranked in the top 5% of higher education institutions globally for SDG 3 ‘Good Health and Well-Being’ by the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 Impact Rankings, placing 55th out of 1,498 institutions.
AKU excels in research, education, and health services, with a strong focus on SDG 3. Between 2017 and 2023, AKU faculty produced over 2,500 publications on SDG 3. The University also scored highly in the number of health-related graduates and collaborations with health services.
Sustainable Development Goals are integrated into AKU’s curriculum through courses at the Institute for Global Health and Development, Institute for Educational Development, and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. AKU supports national policies and curriculum development, with significant contributions to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Dr. Salim Virani, AKU Vice Provost, Research, noted that nearly 80% of faculty publications in 2022 aligned with the UN SDGs, highlighting AKU’s global impact and rapid growth in research. As part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), AKU collaborates with the Aga Khan Health Services to advance health for all. This ranking reflects AKU’s commitment to excellence in healthcare, now recognized globally. The submission to THE was led by Dr. Anil Khamis, with support from Dr. Laila Akbarali and Nasreen Sheikh.
