A major tourism and eco-development initiative has officially been launched in Pakistan as the Galiyat Development Authority (GDA), operating under the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, signed a long-term partnership with private consortium Above Zero for the development of the country’s first purpose-planned mountain destination at Thandiani Top.
The agreement was signed in Islamabad and marks a significant step toward promoting sustainable tourism and international-standard mountain hospitality in northern Pakistan. Officials say the project will be developed under a strict eco-conservation framework aimed at preserving Thandiani’s natural environment, forests, landscapes, and biodiversity while responsibly opening the region for tourism and investment.
According to project details, the master plan is currently being prepared by a leading international architectural firm. The development is expected to include carefully planned tourism infrastructure, hospitality facilities, scenic experiences, and environmentally responsible construction designed to blend with the mountain landscape rather than disrupt it.
Before construction begins, the project will undergo a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) along with regulatory approvals to ensure environmental protection standards are met. Groundbreaking for the project is currently anticipated by late 2026.
Speaking on the initiative, Above Zero CEO Abdullah Khan described the project as more than just a tourism development. He said the vision is to create a new relationship between tourism and nature in Pakistan’s mountain regions.
“Above Zero is not a project, it is a standard. Decades from now, we want this to be remembered as the moment Pakistan chose a different relationship with its mountains,” he stated.
The development is expected to position Thandiani as a world-class mountain tourism destination while also creating economic opportunities through eco-tourism, hospitality, employment, and regional infrastructure growth.
Tourism experts believe the project could help redefine sustainable tourism in Pakistan by balancing development with environmental conservation — an approach increasingly being adopted globally in ecologically sensitive destinations.
