The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to introduce modern train services on multiple railway routes across the province, including the proposed Kohat–Kharlachi rail link, as part of efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure and regional connectivity.
The decision was taken during a meeting on railway affairs chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi at the KP House in Islamabad. Officials briefed the meeting on various ongoing and proposed railway initiatives in the province.
According to the briefing, the Kohat–Kharlachi railway project involves the construction of a 192-kilometre rail line at an estimated cost of $642 million. Authorities expect the project to be completed within two years. The feasibility study for the project has already been completed, while land acquisition is currently underway.
The chief minister stated that the Kohat–Kharlachi rail service is a necessary project and emphasized that it would significantly improve passenger mobility while also supporting trade and commercial activities in the region.
The meeting also reviewed a proposal to operate a safari train on the 32-kilometre Jamrud–Landi Kotal railway track, aimed at promoting tourism and heritage rail experiences in the province. The chief minister directed relevant departments to prepare detailed plans with clear timelines for all railway initiatives.
Participants agreed on the need to strengthen coordination between the KP government and Pakistan Railways. The chief minister assured full cooperation with Pakistan Railways to ensure smooth implementation of railway projects across the province.
