The Islamabad–Lahore Motorway (M-2) is set to receive Pakistan’s most advanced real-time weather alert system, “Weather on the Way,” aimed at enhancing safety for millions of motorists traveling this major route.
The system is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between WeatherWalay and One Network, offering hyperlocal, real-time weather alerts to drivers, motorway operators, and government agencies.
Equipped with 14 automated weather stations, 5 air-quality sensors, 4 visibility sensors, satellite inputs, and advanced forecasts, the system continuously monitors fog, rainfall, wind, and low-visibility conditions. A decision-support engine instantly processes the data and alerts travelers via smartphone apps, web platforms, and SMD screens at toll plazas.
For the first time in Pakistan, all stakeholders will have access to the same real-time weather intelligence, improving route planning and hazard awareness in line with global road safety standards.
Wide-Ranging Benefits Beyond the Motorway
- Support for agricultural planning and irrigation decisions
- Accurate fog prediction for vulnerable motorway sections
- Air-quality monitoring
- Early warnings for dengue, crop pests, and plant diseases
- Improved logistics, tourism planning, and environmental protection
Using climate models from Europe, Germany, the U.S., Switzerland, and local data, the system delivers high-accuracy forecasts tailored to Pakistan’s diverse terrain. Micro-climate mapping by WeatherWalay has already highlighted significant variations in rainfall within short distances, demonstrating the need for hyperlocal weather intelligence.
The “Weather on the Way” system marks a major step toward safer highways, better early-warning systems, and modern climate infrastructure, benefiting travelers, farmers, public safety agencies, and multiple sectors including agriculture, transport, energy, and urban planning.
