Pakistan’s aviation sector expanded on Monday with the formal launch of South Air, a new domestic airline that aims to strengthen regional connectivity and offer more accessible travel options across the country.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani described the launch as a “historic step” for Pakistan’s transport and economic landscape. He noted that South Air is expected to play an important role in connecting smaller and underserved cities in South Punjab, interior Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Gilani emphasized that stronger air links would not only make travel easier, but also support local development, improve access to essential services and contribute to national cohesion. He highlighted his long-standing association with Multan and expressed confidence that the new airline would help unlock the region’s economic and cultural potential.
South Air’s first commercial flight is scheduled to operate from Karachi to Multan, with plans to gradually expand its network to additional domestic destinations as the airline grows.
During his address, Gilani urged the airline’s management to keep fares affordable, stressing that people from all income groups including public representatives often struggle with high ticket prices. Making air travel accessible, he said, would be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of improved connectivity are widely shared.
The launch ceremony was attended by South Air executives, legislators and business leaders, who expressed optimism that the new carrier would stimulate economic activity, create jobs and provide travelers with more convenient and competitive domestic options.
With its focus on underserved routes and regional links, South Air is positioning itself as a key contributor to Pakistan’s evolving aviation landscape.
