MIRPUR, AJK: In a landmark move to enhance regional connectivity, Pakistan has decided to construct an international airport in Mirpur, providing modern air travel facilities to millions of citizens both within the country and abroad.
According to officials, construction is expected to begin within the current fiscal year, marking a significant infrastructure milestone for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) confirmed that the technical feasibility process is already in progress. This includes site identification, engineering evaluations, and environmental assessments to determine the most viable location for the airport.
“The Pakistan Airports Authority has started the process of technical feasibility, including site identification,” said the spokesperson. “The initial work, including technical studies, is likely to be completed by December 2025.”
Once the feasibility and design approvals are finalized, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mirpur International Airport will follow. Officials emphasized that the project has been prioritized due to Mirpur’s large diaspora community abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom.
The airport is expected to ease travel for overseas Pakistanis, who currently rely on airports in Islamabad or other provinces. It will also stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities, and attract investment in aviation-linked industries.
“The Authority has initiated groundwork and aims to complete all technical studies and approvals by the end of 2025,” the spokesperson added, reaffirming PAA’s commitment to timely completion.
Once completed, the Mirpur International Airport will serve as a modern aviation hub for northern Pakistan, connecting AJK with major domestic and international destinations while supporting trade, tourism, and community ties.
