Amid a fuel crisis affecting police operations in Punjab, the Punjab Police has opted for an innovative solution by deciding to procure hundreds of electric bikes. The move aims to combat fuel shortages and yield significant savings in fuel expenses annually.
Punjab Police’s Inspector General, Dr. Usman Anwar, confirmed the decision, stating that he discussed the fuel shortage issue with Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi. While Naqvi assured the release of funds for fuel, he also recommended a shift to electric vehicles.
In response, the Punjab Police has chosen to purchase 200 electric bikes, allocating Rs. 30 million for this purpose. The severe fuel shortage has left thousands of police vehicles on the verge of running out of fuel, prompted by significant budget cuts for petrol, oil, and lubricants (POL), coupled with an extension of the fiscal year’s quarter period.
This move towards electric bikes not only addresses the immediate fuel crisis but also aligns with a broader sustainability agenda in the face of resource challenges.
