The transgender community has declared its active participation in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024. During a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, leaders Bindia Rana, Dr. Meereb Awan, and Shehzadi Rai announced their community’s intent to contest in the elections, emphasizing the need for representation.
In addition to their political aspirations, the transgender community announced the Moorat March at Frere Hall in Karachi on November 19. The march aims to advocate for fundamental rights, including inheritance rights, and address the prevalent violence against transgender individuals in the guise of honor.
The leaders drew attention to the dearth of employment opportunities for the transgender community and urged an end to policies that perpetuate disrespect. They called for the elimination of discriminatory practices against transgender individuals from existing laws and criticized the Sindh government for failing to fulfill its commitment to provide jobs to the community as per the allocated quota.
Bindia Rana highlighted a concerning development, noting that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has ceased issuing X identity cards. Dr. Meerab urged public participation in the Moorat March, scheduled from 3 pm to 6 pm on November 19. The transgender community’s proactive involvement in electoral processes and advocacy reflects a broader push for recognition, rights, and an end to systemic discrimination.
