During a hearing on Thursday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) informed the Supreme Court that the national elections are scheduled for February 11, 2024. This announcement came in response to pleas from various entities, including the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who had expressed concerns about potential election delays.
Sajeel Swati, the ECP’s legal counsel, clarified that the general election would occur on February 11, 2024, following the completion of the delimitation process, which is expected to finish by November 30.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa questioned whether President Arif Alvi had endorsed this decision, and Justice Athar Minallah noted the president’s constitutional authority to determine the election date.
As a result of this discussion, Chief Justice Isa instructed the Election Commission to engage in consultations with the president on this matter.
