As per recently obtained documents, the Higher Education Department has formally approached the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) for the regular recruitment of 138 assistant professors (Grade 18) and 553 lecturers (Grade 17). These requisitions have been submitted to the PPSC using their official forms, urging an immediate commencement of the recruitment process and the prompt submission of candidate recommendations.
The documents also reveal that Punjab houses a total of 121 commerce colleges, categorized into 81 for boys, 16 for girls, and 24 offering co-education. Higher Education Secretary Javed Akhtar Mehmood, when contacted, disclosed that there are currently 750 assistant professors and lecturers in commerce colleges across the province. However, with 150 expected retirements in 2021-22 and an additional 120 in 2023, the necessity for new recruitment becomes evident.
Significantly, in 2022, a shift in educational programs was observed, with the introduction of BS Commerce, BBA, BS Accounting and Finance, and BS Management Science in commerce colleges. Most colleges commenced these programs in 2023, departing from the previous norm of only offering D.Com at this level. Moreover, programs such as ICS, I.Com, and FAIT at FA level, as well as associate degree programs, have been implemented over the last two years, contributing to a more diverse educational landscape.
Furthermore, there are plans to introduce BS Computer Science in commerce colleges, necessitating the hiring of additional teachers for 8-semester degree programs. The department is also tailoring degree programs to regional needs, with plans for a BS Real Estate Business degree program in Lahore and a BS Agri Business degree program in Multan. These expansions will require more teaching staff.
To enhance employment opportunities, the introduction of computerized accounting and a diploma in office management in evening classes at commerce colleges is in progress.
In summary, the Higher Education Department is actively seeking to address staffing needs, adapt to evolving educational requirements, and promote employment opportunities through a series of strategic initiatives in Punjab’s commerce colleges.
